AN ENERGY EFFICIENT MODERN HOME

On the site of a former bungalow, our clients wanted us to design a contemporary house meeting Passivhaus standards for thermal efficiency. The aim was to achieve a building that requires neither mains electricity nor gas.

Another challenge was its location, in close proximity to Bath's Grade I listed crescent, Somerset Place. This meant that while modern, the architecture and materials still had to be sympathetic to the historic structure.

The modern villa we designed fits neatly among the neighbouring buildings and features a super-insulated timber frame with triple-glazed doors and windows for exceptional thermal performance. Unfortunately, solar panels could not be fitted to the roof due to the conservation order covering the area, so the property does require a small amount of external energy to run. However, it is extremely efficient in terms of running costs and has a very attractive modern aesthetic.
